Representation
Characters within soaps can be representated in numerous ways; this can be through gedre, ethnicity, sexual prefences, ages, occupations, incomes, social stauses, and family backgrounds. The characters are suppost to represent the society of their location and are usually from the working class in order to create realism.
Contemporary social issues are usually injected into the storylines in order to create differences in opinion and try to be topicals, which is why soaps are often critisised for the reinforcement or challenge of our ideas. When there are serious or negative social issues within an episode of a soap they have helplines which are related to the issue, this shows the power which soaps have and relate on real life issues.
Soaps story lines pften contain conflict between characters as it influences the audiences to take sides; the audiences opion on which side to take is usually affected by how they can relate to the issues which is why soaps are considered to be thought-provoking.
