Most soap stereotypically contain very little, and almost no editing in order to create a realistic affect which the audience can believe and relate to, however not all of our British modern soaps follow these stereotypical conventions fully, an example of a modern soap which avoids some media conventions is Hollyoaks.
Many episodes of Hollyoaks feature pop soundtracks as non-diegetic sound within the beginning frames straight after the title scene, this somewhat avoids the sound convention of British soap opera as it is using non-diegetic sound, on the other hand the soundtrack which is playing normally tends to blend into diegetic sound as it also play in the background of the scene.
I found that in this period of non-diegetic sound track, the soap introduces storylines through fades from different settings and characters in order to interweave them, they also feature panning shots which go from one setting to another which may be a breach of both editing (the use of faces) and camera (shot from a non realistic viewpoint) conventions. Another editing feature which I found that challenged soap editing conventions was the use of text message within scenes, this is because instead of seeing the text message from the characters point of view, the viewers are shown the message in a bubble that appears on screen, which again is unrealistic, therefore challenging the soap conventions.
